Our friend, Google

June 4th, 2006 by The Bosphorus

Ok, so I don’t usually write about tech stuff, but this caught my attention.

It’s a so called google pack of “useful, free software for your PC.” Now, I don’t know about you, but google seems to be getting too full of itself. It does things so well and efficiently. Harry Truman said that “when ever you have an efficient government you have a dictatorship.” I think that applies to big, seemingly benign software companies, too.

I think google is going to be trouble some day. That’s just me…

I think at this point, Google is just really, really, really good at what it sets out to do. Google Earth is one of the most innovative and kickass programs I’ve ever seen in the 20 odd years of computer geekery I’ve been involved in. Gmail is great, I use it exclusively. Google web search is good. Picasa is an excellent photo editor.
I fear big companies also, particularly one that bows down to China the way Google does, but I ain’t worried yet.

They’re more like an unorganized storm front at this point, but one that is gaining strength. You’re right, all their individual tools work so well. It’s the sum of them that is worrisome.

I think that its inevitable that Google will end up hitting the same snags that befall every other large software company. For the record, I think that Google will, over time, become that company, as pressure from stockholders and the marketplace bend that whole “Do no evil” to “Do no evil (to the bottom line)”, but I don’t think its happened yet.
You don’t seem to have this problem with Microsoft, Bos. Que?

It goes w/o saying what a laviathan Microsoft is. Actually it’s been said many times already, so that’s a dead horse I don’t need to beat.

No, I think Google’s collection of excellent information gathering and organizing software, which they also want to get onto every computer (just like Microsoft), could be put to some fearsome tasks. Just imagine Google as part of the war on terror, drugs or what ever police state brain wave comes next.

Google’s do no evil is well intentioned, but…
