My ant defenses include a 3 foot barrier of diazanon (sp?) around the whole house, cutting back the tree branches, and in the worst (I try to avoid this) spraying ant killer around all baseboards. We tried it and liked it and have been using it for a couple of years. It's relatively good at keeping the bugs away, and neither our children nor animals seem to have a bad reaction of any sort to it.
