Election aftermath

August 4th, 2006 by Atomictumor

Oak Ridger has the laydown here, but as they tend to change their breaking news link for whatever reason, I’m going to copy it over. Haven’t been able to find numbers. I got a copy of the News Sentinel, but for some reason Anderson County doesn’t have any returns. Whats up with that, Mike Silence?
Sheriff - Paul White
DA - Dave Clark
Chancellor - Bill Lantrip
Div 1 General Judge - Don Layton
Juvie Judge - April Meldrum
Trustee - Rodney Archer
District 8 commish - Iwanski and Biloski
District 7 commish - Creasey and Shuey (by one vote, damn!)

Now the commentary.

I’m not sure if I am not getting something that most people are getting, or if that most people voting are a little ignorant of whats going on. Maybe get get swayed by the colorful signs. I don’t get it.

I think I was most tore up about the Gen Judge race, simply because Layton seems to display Scalia like tendancies (like displaying a punk assed attitude) which doesn’t befit the office. Oh well. The Sheriff race I didn’t have much invested in, as long as they’re not out to get me and my precious, I’ll be OK.

Nice to see some change in the Juvie Judge and Trustee side of things. Dammit, I’m for younger people in politics, and its good to see that happening around here. Not that I intend to make much use of either persons services, as my taxes are eschrowed and I don’t even WANT to deal with that, and the minute that MastaG gets into Juvie trouble, ka-pow, military school. Or jail. I’ll be the dad going “Try him like an adult!”

I digress.

Chancellor is probably as it should be. Its a shame that Ramsey is leaving public office with such a stain, as he probably was worthy of more praise at one point. Still, he’s a nice guy (leastways when I met him), and I wish him well.

DA works. I was primarily concerned about Hunt getting in there, so I don’t mind Corea’s loss. It would have been nice to see her, just to see how things would work out, but it also would have been nice to see Nader or Perot win a few years ago for those same reasons. Oh well.

The district elections as well work out. I really didn’t think that district 8 had a bad candidate, and while I was rooting for Brinkman, I don’t lament her loss. No comment on 7, but Eaves and Bos may say more later.

Senatorial race is now Ford and Corker, no big suprise there. Write in A. Tom Ictuma in November and mess with all of their plans. More on that later.

In Knox land, the only beef I have is Hutchison being re-elected. The bastard stands in the way of murder investigations, and has been a source of problems for a decade, and gets re-elected? You Knoxvillians really need to get one of our Police Chief’s of the YearSeriously.

So what, if anything, does this mean for Beauchamp?

I totally agree on judge Layton issue. I am appalled that the people of Anderson County have re-elected him. I work in the legal field and you would not believe the way he treats people. Once, he dismissed 50 or so collection cases of a new attorney because she was in the hallway trying to settle them and he told her “this is my court, not a collection agency”. She pleaded with him that if he dismissed her cases, she would get fired. He did it anyway and she left the court room in tears. It is common practice for a creditor’s attorney to try to settle cases in the hallway outside the courtroom, unfortunately, she did not know the wrath of judge Layton. Good blogging by the way!

Joel: It means that Beauchamp is 2 for 4, which is about status quo for what he was before. He still has Layton, his political ace in the hole, and a new quantity in the sheriff dept to replace Bill White, who evidently went rogue on him.

Edsone: Thanks. I don’t understand how the guy got re-elected. It might be the buddy factor, or the ignorance factor. It could be that Stuart represented the Mass. democrat, what with the glasses, which is the fear of ignorant people and good old boys everywhere. I really don’t know, but I wish he had got the job.

I would think it is mostly ignorance for people who don’t really get involved and see all the mud slinging going on. They just think its been working so far and they recognize the name, so they vote for him. From what I understand, it was a close race. I have heard that David Stuart is a great attorney and many enjoy working with him on his cases. Maybe he will try again next time! I think with Meldrum winning the juvie election, it will give the system a fresh face and hopefully a new start to try some new things with our delinquents and deadbeat parents. I can remember being in high school and all the kids hated Judge Hess. I’ve heard stories of kids spitting at her, etc. The only thing that worries me, is many attorneys do not like working with Meldrum, so hopefully that isn’t foresight into her future as a judge. I was kind of disappointed in Corea’s loss to Clark. I am surprised that he got the position with his lack of criminal experience. Les Hunt definately was not the best candidate, so no loss there. Ann Corea was definately a very capable candidate and I assume Clark is capable as well, but we shall see.

I am sorely, sorely disappointed with Joseph Lee’s one vote loss, but pleased that Creasey was re-elected with no problem.
The Layton victory is also hard to take, but I think that AT & edsone have already covered that nicely.
As for the rest, I can’t complain.

Looks like we have an exciting race for the senate coming up…

AT, great election season blogging. I don’t know when I have had a better time chewing the fat pre-election.

As for Beauchamp, I would be worried if I were him. He lost Ramsey. The DA’s office was the only barrier to his being indicted in 2003/04. No doubt that Judge Layton would be an excellent friend to have in Anderson County, but he doesn’t run the DA’s office and he wouldn’t be the judge in a case involving Beauchamp.

Dave Clark should hear, an very soon, from those of us who would like the Beauchamp investigation re-opened.

Just my totally uneducated 2 cents worth.

  7. Joel Says:

    The plot thickens.

  8. Atomictumor Says:

    Lay one on him, brother.

  9. The Bosphorus Says:

Daco, I think you’re right about lighting a fire under the DA’s office concerning Beauchamp. I wonder where Clark will fall in relation to Beauchamp. I wonder what his priorities are going into office?
