I wrote about it before, and I’ll say it again: I am so glad it seems they’re going down the tubes.
AT went over a few minutes ago for a quick beer and coffee run, and upon checking out with his Food City card, was asked for his phone number. And not in a “Damn, your a hot hunk of man, can I call you sometime” kind of way. Not that he isn’t.
Ahem. I digress. Apparently it’s now protocol to give your digits when you use your card. AT told them no, and a crisis was averted.
Stupid Food City.

What really sucks is that we’re really running out of alternatives. Food Lion is a joke. Food City have their prohibition-esc beer and TIA phone number crap, and Kroger’s just expensive, has crappy meat and produce, and no 8′o clock bean. Gotta have the bean.

Please put a store here, Earth Fare.
Pretty please?
August 8th, 2006 at 5:38 pm
Good grief, big deal.
August 8th, 2006 at 5:54 pm
Thats the attitude, chummmmp
August 8th, 2006 at 5:58 pm
Actually, lets revisit that. Why go to the trouble of posting a comment that says “Good grief, big deal”. I mean, not withstanding the fact that you don’t mind gradually giving up more and more of your personal information to companies to sell in large databases, but the fact that you logged into this website just to give that bit of intelligence.
Seriously? What the fuck? I’ve always figured you for a fairly decent person, based on the fact that we have some mutual friends, but this kind of trolling we’d expect from the 4.156 guy, or somebody like that.
Hows that for a big deal, bitches?

The AT smackdown.
August 8th, 2006 at 6:42 pm
GAC thought it was a little over the top…
August 8th, 2006 at 7:53 pm
You know I don’t really consider Earth fare to be a ‘real’ alternative. They’re just too expensive for the sort of everyday shopping that would make it anything other than a luxury in my book. I think earth fare is excellent for what it is, but economical it ain’t.
What we need is a decent grocery store that doesn’t charge yuppyfied prices.
August 8th, 2006 at 9:13 pm
No such animal Bos. Of course “decent” is a relative term I guess.
August 8th, 2006 at 9:18 pm
Yeah, Earth Fare would be more a novelty than anything else. That’s definitely where I’d go to get my beer on, though.
It’d be nice to have a well-rounded mom and pop kind of store, like Archer’s in Norris. Reasonable prices, good beer, great meat selection, and you know your butcher and grocery personally.
August 8th, 2006 at 9:38 pm
That’s what I’m talking about… an Archer’s of sorts. I don’t think I’m looking for a mecca of grocery stores just something in between mediocrity and yuppyville.

Oak Ridge does have a good butchershop btw. J&M butchershop on Jefferson Ave.
Lousey location, excellent customer service, good products and very good prices.
August 8th, 2006 at 9:44 pm
See, daco, us implanted Oak Ridgers don’t know of all these small, privately owned operations. The next time we grill out, I’ll look at J&M first.
Are there any other Oak Ridge oddities that I might not know about? Especially out on the west side of town, as I rarely have reason to head that way…
August 8th, 2006 at 9:51 pm
No kidding. We Cemestos Gardenites had no idea about J&M.
August 8th, 2006 at 10:56 pm
I think J7M is fairly new. I haven’t been there yet but it is on my list of places to go and people to see.
August 8th, 2006 at 11:28 pm
I also hear there’s a pharmacy (or something similar) that makes great burgers. I’m thinking it’s either near Jackson Square or in the Woodland area. Any idea what I’m talking about?

Daco is Johnny on the spot. What else are you holding out on us, D?
August 9th, 2006 at 3:09 pm
I’ve said ever since I got here that what we need is a Trader Joe’s - west coast chain (but I see they’re putting one in Atlanta and New York)
Wonderful food, affordable - great beer and chocolate (wine and champagne too, but not in this state)
www.traderjoes.com
That and a bakery … and a pub … and we may never leave.
August 9th, 2006 at 3:22 pm
I see nothing wrong with that either. Seems like I’ve been to a trader joes at some point… do they have em in Canada?
August 9th, 2006 at 3:23 pm
Well, checking the site, I guess not. Still tho, that looks cool as hell
August 9th, 2006 at 3:49 pm
Not holding back folks. J&M just opened in the last couple of months and the topic hadn’t come up here in ATland.
Yeah GAC, you’re probably thinking of Jefferson drug store. Not a big fan. The food is pretty good, but the prices are a little high for what you get and the service, in my experience ain’t all it should be.
BTW, you can see J&M butcher shop from Jefferson drug store. Good peoples.

There’s a trader Joes here. It’s ok. A little overrated IMO.
