Atomictumor.com - Not fully ADA compliant…
September 13th, 2006 by Atomictumor
Apparently websites can be sued for not being compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act? Who knew?
The story:
Target was sued back in February for not having ‘alt’ tags on their website, which, under a proper setup, will make Microsoft Sam start jabbering about the page, so folks with eyes worse than GACs will know what the mouse is landing on.
The article linked seems to imply that this will not only go for retail sites, like Target, but ultimately every website out there.
Coding ‘alt’ tags is good coding, sure, but I’m not really too concerned if Microsoft Sam isn’t going to read them. Its unfortunate that technology has not improved to the point where the blind can see, and I agree that efforts should be made to include everybody, but for pete’s sake, don’t friggin sue me over it.

I wouldn’t be too worried:

In any case, if you were worried, you could put a statement on your website “ADA Compliance Statement: If you have trouble reading this website, send an email to ####@####.com and we’ll be happy to assist you”.

Good researching. Nah, I’m not really worried, more just wanted an excuse to put that picture up…
Why would the ADA be trying to flog an apparently dead horse?

Go figure. I thought putting click and mortar with Uncle Gates encoding of Accessibility Options in the control panel gave the handicapped a better life. Now we have to pay for brick and mortar and click and mortar handicapped accessibility. I also thought the number of handicapped people in the out of the home work force was declining because of the accessibility of the computer. Now it is not enough? These lawyers are really losing it. Just how many blind people shop by themselves? Have a normal person look for a price on any item in a brick and mortar and then hope to have it for the price you assumed it was. Where is my lawyer, I would like to sue someone suing someone for nothing else better to do. The cruise lines have had this problem for years from the ADA, but still the safety of the ship is before the loading of a handicapped passenger.
I was hoping to click your sign and get bathroom sounds over my speakers.

Hey, I’ll bet that’d be compliant…

Being compliant is a joke. I had a better comment but I clicked the link and didn’t do the usual “Open in new window.” Ehh.
