Onion AV’s 19 Terrific Midnight Movies

October 2nd, 2006 by Atomictumor

Is a list that I can damn well agree with, and it pleases my indie sensibilities that I have seen all but two of these movies, and agree that they (with some exceptions) were all damn fine flicks.

If you haven’t seen em all, get loaded up on alcohol (or alternative substances if your personal moral code demands it), and enjoy.

Actually, maybe we should have a movie night get together… that’d be cool.

Donnie Darko, Memento, Harold & Kumar - yes
    Bad Santa - no way

“Did Doogie just steal your car?”

  2. Atomictumor Says:

Yeah, I never saw Bad Santa. I wasn’t crazy about Devils Rejects either, it just seemed to fail at whatever it was attempting. It wasn’t really creepy, or scary, or blackly comical, and it really wasn’t that gory.

  3. daco Says:

Have only seen two on the list. Kind of embarrassed to admit that I’ve seen them too?

  4. meice Says:

Eh.. That’s a so-so list. I think most of those titles I’ve seen but passed up.
    I’ve seen 3, 9, 16, 17, 18 and the Mrs and I rried to watch 19.

  5. GoldenAppleCorp Says:

I don’t know where you’ve been AT, but we’ve seen Bad Santa.
What we haven’t seen are: Series 7, Femme Fatale, Alone in the Dark, & Idiocracy.
I don’t feel that I’m missing much there, though.

  6. GoldenAppleCorp Says:

    Heh, daco… which two?

  7. AT Says:

You must have seen Bad Santa with the poolboy, baby, cause it wasn’t me.

  8. daco Says:

Bad Santa and Harold and Kumar.

  9. GoldenAppleCorp Says:

Dude, we totally saw it. Remember, cuz I bitched about the chick from Gilmore Girls all the way through it…
And the midget. No one can forget a black midget.

  10. Atomictumor Says:

You bitched about the chick from Gilmore Girls all the way through Sin City, but, again, it must have been to the poolboy if you’re talking about Bad Santa.

  11. meice Says:

High Tension is pretty decent but it didn’t make the list.

  12. Fake Rake Says:

And I thought I was the only one in the country who’d seen Happiness Of The Katakuris.

  13. Atomictumor Says:

Yep, we had to have a copy of that one. Its just too damned goofy.

  14. Joe P. Says:

When the top 3 are Bubba Ho-Tep, Donnie D. and Office Space, that is one fine start. I might put Devils Rejects a little higher on the list - it makes ya feel slimy watching it, but it remains the finest use on film of “Free Bird”.
Oddly, when I watched Memento, I kept thinking I had seen it before … creepy.
I have no valid reasons for enjoying Femme Fatale, Harold and Kumar, or Bad Santa but I liked them all. Bad Santa may be Billy Bob’s best performance ever.
And while the Katakuris movie was weirdly entertaining, the one movie they should have included instead is Gozu. It’s like an acid trip in a Kyoto alleyway with David Lynch and Luis Bunuel.
Plus, instead of Huckabees, I would have mentioned Being John Malkovich.
    I heart midnight movies.
