A moment of silence for Youtube…
Saturday, October 14th, 2006Yes, folks, its official, Youtube has been neutered. Sure, you can still post the video of your little nephew’s bar mitzvah, but anything that may smell like copyrighted material is persona non grata.Â
It all started the other day when Google came out of nowhere to buy Youtube in a massive stock offering tha
t made everybody in a 5 county radius filthy rich. Well, no, it really started when the RIAA started snarling like an inbred hillbilly when a suitor comes for his sister at the thought that Youtube was hosting music videos of artists, because, by damn, they’re going to make you pay to watch advertisements for their music.Â
Well, the other day I got notifications that the videos upped for GAC’s post about the best intros for TV shows were ‘in violation’ of some sort of copyright thing, and so the fun begins. This morning, I was perusing Youtube for a clip from a TV show to show ol’ Nodbob, who’s been having a rough morning, and lo and behold, nothing is there.
Yes, if you want to make a video of any other inane kind of dumbness, its all about Youtube. However, if you want to try to watch a TV show on the grainy, poor, 400 X nothing resolution, well, you’re in violation.
Now, I’ve got an idea, but I’m sure it won’t go over, but seems to me that allowing uninhibited use of any kind of video at a profit free place like Youtube (sure, they make a profit, but you don’t pay anything to watch the video) would do nothing but help people who create content. Otherwise, well, we all go back to bit torrent, perfect quality picture and sound, and downloading for free.Â
Which is what they deserve anyway, for doing this to Youtube when I was just getting to like it. Grumble.
