The Grove Center Halloween Festival
October 28th, 2006 by The Bosphorus
We went over to the Grove Center Halloween Festival this morning where the kids got to trick or treat and parade around their costumes.
The eldest won third place for her age group in the costume contest.
She was dressed up as a mailbox.
Last year Spotz won third place for his tugboat costume. We’ve got third place wrapped up at the Grove Center, so don’t even think about usurping the reign of The Cemestos Garden.
The Grove Center must have been a happening place back in its day. I wonder if it could be revitalized? I was talking with some folks the other day about how Oak Ridge was planned to have residential areas within walking distance of commerce centers. You can still see these commerce centers when you drive around town. We’ve even walked past some of them.

Man, that’d be so cool to have decent shopping within walking (or biking) distance. I’m a big fan of towns that can pull that off.

Oak Ridge had that in mind, at least at one time… 60 years ago.

Grove center was certainly well-occupied back in the ’60s. I lived on the opposite end of town, but I can recall a White Stores (my mom said they had the only good chicken in town), a hardware store, a bowling alley and a movie theater.
Of course, I also recall a bustling, active downtown with desireable department stores, a great bakery, an A&P (grocery), a pretty good bookstore, a good music store, a bank, and lots of other stuff. Every storefront was occupied back then, and the sidewalk was crowded on most weekends. It was hard to find a parking spot on the last couple of weekends before Christmas. Of course, folks didn’t go into Knoxville so much back then–the roads weren’t that great.
Sorry for the geezing.

Joel, that’s pretty much my idea of a perfect town.

I saw the kids … I commented to the wife about the mailbox costume … it was next level! Everyone looked great!

Tank, I thought long and hard about coming over and getting onto you about standing us up at our party.
But then I had a beer. :)

Yeah, GAC mentioned that she saw you, but I didn’t have her point you out to me. I’m sorry that I didn’t introduce myself…but I didn’t know it was you! Thanks for the kind words.

I tried one of the beers they were selling outside the Timeout … it about killed me! You should have come over, I am used to getting jumped … and I am sorry about the party.

You probably saw my son singing in Sound Company while you were there - I think they sang about 9am…can’t remember (I was out of town).
From what I hear they’re renovating the theatres in the Grove Theatre (current home of the Church of High Places) to create “the best show venue in town”. We’ll see. I’m hoping so…
