The amazingly affordable ICU care
November 16th, 2006 by Atomictumor
$208,000 is the tab.
I’m suprised, I was expecting more than that. I still have $792,000 left! Go ahead and get sick again, baby, we can afford it! Woot!
Uh, I’m just kidding. Seriously, don’t get sick again.

Considering that it saved her life, I’d call it a bargain.

Wow.

Is insurance going to cover any of it?
November 16th, 2006 at 10:16 am
Oh, wow is right.

Oh yeah, thats my point. We have a million dollar cap. As I understand, very, very little of this is coming out of pocket.
Joel, dude, I wasn’t being sarcastic. I figured this would have been a lot more than this.

First of all good to hear that you parents consider it stable enough to go home. That is a sign of positive direction to me, even if it means that “normal” life is here / back now for you.
Definitely praying about the scans and looking forward to more good / positive news soon. We are still praying and praising and we are not going anywhere.
Like you am surprised that it is only $208K. I would have guess at least $450K. Glad to hear that MOST will be covered and not out of pocket. That is a REAL praise.
Stay strong, be courageous, know we are praying and that we are here.

Dear AT: I have been reading your story of GAC since I found it on the MRSAResources site. My brother went to the hospital on Friday the 13th (hmm) with this killer (literally) staph infection too. He had the brain bleed, the pneumonia, the shutdown of the kidneys, etc. He is at UCLA Med Center, where they moved him to the Neuro ICU after the brain bleed. There was a time, 10 days in, when we too realized, he just might not die from this. A month later, he is in Neuro rehab learning how to walk on his own again. The brain bleed was from his inability to clot properly, not all the drugs. He does have some ringing in his ears now, probably from the Vancomycin. Now that I don’t have to pray for him so much, I will pray for your wife and family.

Craftmatic adjustable beds are like $500 or something. I don’t see why uncomfortable hospital beds cost so much. It’s like a New York apartment, I guess. Location, Location, Location.

Still here and still thinking about you and your BJ.

I seldom think of the cost, since we have universal health coverage by the province, but it staggers me to see 5 years income used up in just 2 weeks. Thank God you have the insurance. Bet you never begrudge premiums again. So about 10 weeks of high level care, and you use up the lot? Wow!!
November 16th, 2006 at 12:34 pm
Well, frankly, I don’t think BJ (or anybody) would survive the level of care given in that first week. I’d say that was the lions share of the cost.

Hi, I’ve been reading your posts. First let me say that I pray for your wife and your family. Second, I apologize for my presumptuous action, but I posted in Rosie O’Donnell ’s site that she should check out your struggle via your blog. I thought that she may be able to, if possible, help in some way. My hope is that she would be able to find the right doctor that would know immediately what to do and your wife will be returned to you.
Many wishes of love and happiness for your wife, you and your family.

Wow! Ask for an itemized bill just to be a buster :) I’d like to see how much they charge for a bandaide, and how much they charge for applying it.
Ok, humor over - still thinking of you and keeping you in my thoughts.

Dude, an itemized bill would certainly land me in the CCU right next to BJ… sure, I’d be closer to her, but there go more insurance costs…
Mariana, I appreciate that, but seriously, there are people worse off than us. We’ve had an enormous, massive, upswell of support that I never knew would show up, so let others have that Rosie lovin’.

Just wait til that itemized bill shows up - the $4.00 teensy bottles of good ol Johnsons baby shampoo just about put me out too. For reference, our hospital bill was $315,000 - 13 of 33 days were in the ICU - but I believe you are going to top us out. Still hanging in there with you my friend…
