On being an online consumer
Wednesday, January 31st, 2007Hoy Bowdy, I’ve always liked consuming things online, but I find more and more that its just totally wickedly rad to buy crap on the internet. Crap that you don’t necessarily need, I don’t recommend trying to get fresh avocados or orphans online, but things like computer garbage, and records, and whatnot.
What prompted this online squeal of excitement was receiving a record in the mail for the second day in a row. Yesterday saw me getting Of Montreal’s Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? which, along with having one of the more interesting album titles in my collection, is a pretty damn good record. However, what was damn gooder was the swag that was packed in the box.
Like Owen. Owen is my new sticker friend that lives on the lappy.
I also got a coupon to download the record gratis from the record company. Thats a big ol woot right there, saving me the moral dilemma of downloading a record that I already have, just to save it on the hard drive. Seems a bit backwards, and Polyvinyl just went ahead and solved that one for me.
Subpop did the same thing for me today, when I opened up a big ol square package to find all sort of goodies hanging out with the new Shins record, Wincing the Night Away. Bos burnt me a copy of his CD for my birthday, but I kept leaving the damn thing at home, so I haven’t had a chance to listen to the thing yet (off duty in 30 minutes… and counting). The goodies in the box included a cute little button, two stickers, a poster, and yet another coupon to download the record in MP3 format.
Now, I can appreciate this.

You don’t get as many goodies, but you save a lot of money when you buy computer crap online. Thanks to the ever thrifty Doug, I’ve become a slickdeals.net freak. I managed to score 3 or 4 things there that I would have bought anyway, for about 70% of what I would have paid. Course, when you buy computer components piecemeal, you sometimes don’t have a place to put them.
Like the 2 gigs of DDR memory I got in the other day. Totally, awesomely cheap, but just sitting in the box, along with the 500 GB harddrive from slickdeals, and the extra 250 GB hard drive that I got for MastaG’s computer but didn’t put in. All sorts of computer goodness, just waiting to tear ass across the living room, but sidelined, because they don’t have a motherboard to call home yet.
I’m working on that. I got the money, and the intention, but everytime I head to newegg.com or one of the sites I buy stuff from, I freeze up. I think buying that damn car has me in haggle/cheapskate mode, and the prices just aren’t low enough.
And thats a bummer. The RAM is starting to give me evil looks…
