Laziness vs. the urge to buy things

January 5th, 2007 by Atomictumor

Remember all those big plans I had about doing work, and rewarding myself?  Remember?

Yeah, I do too.  That was a good talk.  I was all gung-ho, oi oi oi, lets get stuff done!

Well.. uh… apparently the sloth has set back in, or something.  Perhaps its a side effect of feeling like all I do is work, but I haven’t gotten much done lately.

But, I still want to reward myself.

Now, I’m being frugal about it.  I bought, in a horrible fit of monitor envy, a nice 21 inch LCD monitor for the desktop, Newegg had it for cheap, and then with a $40 dollar rebate.  I looked up at the heavens and said “BJ, if you don’t want me to get this, let me know now.”

When the power came back on, I ordered it.

Cha-ching.

I spent some money on something that I’m not allowed to tell you about right now.  Again, I was frugal, did a few days worth of research, and bought it.  NO, its not a sex toy.  Although…
More cha-ching.

But thats not laziness.

The laziness is in the fact that I gave up, yesterday, looking for school classes, because I got overwhelmed.  For that 5 minutes, the urge to just not do it came back.  “Yes, I can go back anytime”.  Indeed.

I still haven’t registered.  I’m leery of doing it on Saturday, because I don’t want to start treading babysitting waters, and I’m leery of doing it online, because I think I’ll suck at that.

Whats a boy to do?

Superego: Suck it up, AT.  You’re being a lazy bastard.

Id: BUY THINGS.  IT MAKES HAPPY.

Ego: Yeah dude, you could probably use a new video card to go with that monitor.  I mean, you have one, if you want to call it that.  I mean, 128 MB of memory?  And you’ve been playing drums, but I don’t see how with those crappy cymbals…  you could probably use some of them.  Hell, you got money!

Id: SPEND MONEY.  BANG CYMBALS MAKE NOISE.

Ego: Seriously dude.  If you buy hi-hats, you’ll need a decent stand.

Superego: That is why your legs are sore, AT, because you’ve been playing drums, so there is a bit of merit there with regards to getting in shape.  However, you need to be frugal.  Do not try to live beyond the means that you’ve been living by for the past…

Id: STUPID UNDERLINED WORDS MAKE ID ANGRY!  ID SMASH!!!!

(scuffle scuffle bang bang)

Superego: Ouch!  Ouch! Mphhfh meheen menbhen

Ego: Dude, you stapled his mouth.  Damn!  Hey, watch it maaaaan.. aaaaaaeee!

NOW ID WRITE WEBSITE.

ME BUY THINGS AND BREAK THEM.  ME LAZY AND WATCH TV.

WHAT WAS ME TALKING ABOUT?

Here’s the thing about signing up for school and getting panic attacks while doing it. That rapidly beating heart and cold sweat might be a warning that school is just too much to add to your burden at the moment, and if so it is good to listen to it, at least as a caution. But…it also might just be the classic flashback to our junior high selves where even seeing a #2 yellow pencil causes Post Tramua Visions of ridicule, rejections and repulsion (you know, the 3 R’s).

Man duder you are such a girl.

Make a plan. Revise plan. Begin to work the plan. Realize the plan needs tweeking. Tweek plan. Continue to work the plan.

For Pete’s sake Sally, get off your arse, work your plan, and do it without breaking the bank.

Is it me or does your Id sound a lot like Cookie Monster?

  6. califdudes Says:

Your Id does sound like Cookie. My advise: Have a cookie. Think about things. Have another cookie. Maybe even a tall glass of milk.

How about this - put all your posts and anything else you want to say into book form. Send it off to lots of publishers. Then when you receive that one letter or phone call (and you will) that tells you they want to publish your book - then you can do anything you want and not have to worry about money.

AT, you’ve done just great with considering all the options, then letting them ferment properly.

One day at a time. Don’t be pushed into what anyone else thinks you should do. You’ll know what’s right when it’s time.

Yeah, I heard about that. Thats pretty cool, every course online. There hasn’t been that kind of progressive thinking on the internet in 7 or 8 years.

Don’t forget a good single-malt while you’re out buying stuff. Mmmm. Single malt.

Hi At, I have been reading your site for a while now- and I have to delurk and tell you that you must go to school! I have been taking online classes for 2 years and I ADORE them. I go to on campus classes as well but find online classes much more do-able. Let me know if you want to know anything else about it!! :) :)
