Well, party people, here we are in week two of 2007. We all apparently survived the first one, and can reasonably expect the same in this one.
Woot.
I’m going to meet with a lady at the bank to talk loans, and might just buy that bastard of a car tonight. I’m armed with what they’re charging at other car lots, and fully expect to knock off about 2 grand from the final deal. At least.
Hardball. Hell yes.

It was pointed out to me that alot of places wouldn’t want to just finance 2 grand of the car, so I might be forced to finance 10 grand or so, which fits with my whole instant gratification get-the-car-now thing. MastaG is all about it, he tells me he wants that particular car, but maybe in a different color. I pondered the logic in that, and he suggested spray painting it when I questioned him.
Good thinking, G.
That boy’s got style, lemme tell you.

Did you check out Carmax? We looked at those cars before deciding on our Honda, which we bought out of the paper, and they were well under what the other dealerships were asking.

Check edmunds.com as well. Let us know how it goes!

Have you “test driven” the car that you want to another Mazda dealer and asked him to better the deal? Betcha haven’t tried that one Betty.

I don’t see the point, man.

That’s the whole point. THen you get them to fight over you. It makes you feel so pretty!!
:-)

The point is to force the two dealers to compete for your business. It will save you money. There is no question that one of them will give you a better price.

Yeah, but if I just go in and SAY, hey, this place told me this one, with this vin blahblahblah will cost me X, what are they going to do?
I gots me numbers, brrrother.

You walk in and say you’re interested. You take a test drive and say how much you like the car. He gives you a number. Then (and only then) you give the first number you’ve got. (If it’s lower.)
You might also want to mention how much you like the salesman/dealership and how you’d love to give them your business.
If the second number is lower, you call the first guy and tell him how much you liked him but you’ve got this other number so….

Have you decided to get the car tonight or not? My husband and I are looking at cars right now too. We’re gonna put down 3K and finance the rest. I want our payments right at 200/mo so I guess our budget right now is 8k. If you see anything cool in that price range will you let me know?

Make sure you give the awkward silence as well. They love the awkward silence in combination with the “dead eye” and a very thoughtful, “Hmmmmmmm.”
It’s all very (strangely) entertaining!
