Asheville

May 5th, 2007 by The Bosphorus

While AT kept an eye on the kids, the Missus, Wingnut and I went to Asheville N.C. to see The Arcade Fire. Don’t worry, because the Missus and I made sure Wing’s ears were plugged during the show. He slept through the whole thing, slung up in Mama’s hippy sling. Taking a baby to a concert is quite an experience. People are much friendlier when you’re toting a drooling baby around. I had half a mind to walk up to one couple making out and warning them to be careful. It’d be my part in the nation’s great sex ed effort. (What effort do you ask? You know, the one where we dither about what to do about hormonal teens. I’m off subject. Never mind.)

Walking around Asheville is fun. There are so many odd, hairy people over there. They’re earnest. But Asheville is full of memories for me. I’ve been making occasional trips to the city since I was in high school when my Aunt and I would go shopping there. I could always find the oddest shoes and hats there. Lately going to shows has drawn me back across the mountains.

If you haven’t listened to The Arcade Fire’s new album, Neon Bible, then repent and listen. It’s worth the effort. That band has some the most talented musicians I’ve seen in a while. There were ten of them on stage and most played several different instruments throughout the show. There was everything from a pipe organ to a euphonium to some boxy sort of instrument with a crank on the end of it.
