A drive with Pigpen

May 10th, 2007 by Atomictumor

On the way to pick MastaG up, we had a quiet ride for the first minute or so, when Pigpen piped up:

“I want the one with the shark!”

“What?”

“I WAAaant the one with the shark.”  He had emphasized his desire for maximum effect.

“Pigpen,” I said “You just had a birthday.  You just got all sorts of toys.  Are you telling me you want something else?”

“Yes.”

“Well darn it, Pigpen, I’ve about had it with you constantly wanting a toy just to get it, and then not doing anything with it.  Can’t you be happy with what you have? (ha) How come you never ask what somebody else wants?”

“… What do you want, Daddy?”

“I want my Pigpen, little buddy.”

“Oh.  I want the one with the shark.”

Later in the drive, I had him asking for it in various voices.  He was able to ask for “the one with the shark” in a monster voice, a robot voice, an alien voice, a squeaky mouse voice, my voice, G’s voice, BJ’s voice (it was quiet and high pitched), a silly voice, a happy voice, a goofy voice, a shark voice (?), and a whiny voice.

He’s talented.

OK AT what does he want with the shark? You never told us what he wanted.

I bet the whiny voice was a hard one for him to do…

He gets this sort of talent from his Pop.

    Will he get the shark?

I haven’t seen any sharks, but there is a strange monster sort of toy in the back seat of my car that I think must be Pigpen’s.

I could grill him some shark though — really good with a teriyaki marinade.

We had us some shark on our honeymoon 30 years ago. Not bad. In Charleston (”where the Ashley and the Cooper river meet to form the Atlantic Ocean”), shark is considered the fish only black folks eat. It was fine for me. I gather it doesn’t keep well, though.

    Is it a transformer?

I love this story. I’m impressed with how you reminded him to think about somebody else besides himself, and he asked about you without any hesitation. What a great kid.
I need more often to remind my kids to be thoughtful, instead of just getting upset with them when they aren’t. It worked for Pigpen (at least for a minute). Sounds like he really does want that one with the shark.
