I used to share your wonderings about my generation. That is until I realized that my generation, despite all of the work we put into being different, was exactly like every other generation. Well except maybe we were just a bit more spoiled than the previous generation.

It's sounds to me like you are talking about the 60's except we might have had more gutsd than any other generation. You keep talking about being a hippie but we are the true hippies. God, I sound too mature. I know and I walked to school ten miles in the snow with holes in my shoes.

OK, lets clarify something:
AT is not a hippie.
I'm an aging punk rocker.
I could be considered an fringe indie scenester.
I'm not a hippie.
No.

But I do have a hippiesh beard and hair. So did Jesus.

But more to the point, girlfriend, you're right. My generation is jaded and cynical, because it watched your generation have all these good ideas, and work and work and work to get it done, and never succeed.
Then the hippies bought in, started running, got fancy jobs and nice houses on the hill. Eventually their level of "changing things" became becoming involved in the politics of liberal insiders, who are damn near as bad as the conservative insiders (now, truly, I'm not pointing a finger here, just makeing a general observation).
So, yeah, your generation worked harder. We both ended up with the same results, tho, when mine decided to stay home.

Well, I guess we didn't get tear gassed as much...

I agree w/ Daco about the 60's/boomer/hippy generation. I think hippies are riding the on the wake of the civil righters of the fifties.

I also think the 90's generation's penchant for self-expression has its roots in the hippie find yourself/follow your bliss nonsense. Except that now folks have figured out how to commodify that self-expression. Look at Apple computers. They come off as the artsy iconoclastic answer to the pc greybox geek. What a load of bs. Apple is a fascist organization, consider all the legal mumbojumbo around the ipod and itunes. What I can only burn x number of copies of something I've paid for?!! (I use itunes by the way :).

"Apple is a fascist organization"
Jeez o Pete man, lack of sleep is just eating you up, chum. A fascist organization?
Its a corporation duder, one that was smart enough to get a lock down on both the hardware and the software, which is something the PC industry never managed. By locking everything down, they're simply following the business model I was bitching about yesterday. Hell, since they've been doing it that way since the 80s, they're really one of the forefathers of the DRM'd up ought decade.
Goes right back to "how to stick it to em?" Not buy their product? That doesn't as much stick it to em, as it does make em advertise to you more. No, what you do is CIRCUMVENT.
But, back to topic, yeah, calling em fascist is going a little far.

Catherine: Sigh. You outted me.

God, how did we go from self expression and fighting for rights to computers. Hate to say this AT but I am starting to believe that geek stuff. And you are right AT, we killed ourselves to get nowhere. I guess everything goes full circle. We protested Vietnam, very few protest Iraq. We couldn't stop Vietnam. Maybe you guys learned from us that sometimes it just isn't worth it because it is a waste of energy.. I hate sounding cynical.

AT can't be Jesus. Jesus was in the car behind me last night at the stop light. And he can do alot things, Jesus, but he can't be in two states at one time. Unless he is like Santa Claus I guess. Dude seriously has much longer hair than AT (if that is possible).

Enjoying this thread immensely.

Too many things flying around to head in any one direction, but I'll try.... From what I've seen each "generation" seeks to establish their own identity and in doing so becomes that which has gone before. Don'tcha just hate it when you realize you are your parents!

Also seems with the passage of time comes an inkling (for some) of what is "truly meaningful" and it aint striving to be different. It remains for each of us to discover just what meaningful is and just maybe that's what this is all about.

Seems like there are some folks on this site kinda wandering around that path of discovery, fellow travelers, as it were.

Oh, and I agree with vixen, that Buddy is right on, you.

"Don’tcha just hate it when you realize you are your parents!"

No, what I hate is reading that, thinking about it and realizing I am my grandmother! Albeit she rocks, but still.

I think I am that lost generation: on the edge of two different generations and the ideas of both mixed up in my head. I am still trying to find my path.

Oh and I had a almost-teenage daughter in the 90s so that decade is pretty much a blur of music videos to me.

I think we're talking about intergenerational bobos: aka bourgeois bohemians. This article is a bit dated, but still rings true:

Sitting here sipping my organic shade-grown, bird-friendly, sustainable coffee from my locally hand-thrown pottery mug and contemplating that... Because contemplating is what bobos do best. (Well, that and spending money).

Wait... bobo means idiot? My 2 year old twins call their pacifiers "bo bo's". They picked up from daycare. Where they continue to be the only whities there.

Hmmmmm.

AT, I think we're right around the same age. I graduated in 1990 and remember well the first Iraq War suddenly bringing birkenstocks and bajas and tie-dye right back in style. The only thing I think we made cool was probably flannel a la Nirvana. Sad that that's what we did with all our choices: Yeah! Flannel! Take that mom and dad! And when my flannel didn't do the trick I got my first tattoo. I was married by then, so what the hell was I still rebelling for anyhow?!

Every generation has their alt culture which is really just another clique. Whatever makes you happy right? Now there is the emo craze and it has stolen my 13 year old. They're just updated punk clothes with lots of stripes. Sort of a mish mash of punk and goth. I actually like it on her, so whatever!

When your a teenager no one else exist except your peer group. I remember plenty of people that where fine going with the flow and wearing what everyone else was wearing. To me, it wasn't a generation trying to be different it was the different people in the 90s finding each other and becoming friends. I think a lot of my group of friends were giving the finger to the area that we are/were in. It might be easier to express yourself in a place that has more diversity and more happening. Aside from that, music and music videos is a big part of every teen's life and I think that was magnified with the music videos and MTV. What music you listen to can say a lot about you and that is all we were trying to do is scream above the crowd to make ourselves heard. I know for myself, if my friends were being taken off to war against their will and so many people I knew personally were coming home dead, I would be more active in the fight against it.

I think it's a matter of the human need to have some sort of tribal affinity, especially in this increasingly homogenized world. Hippies, punkers, straightedge, frat rat, mallrat, fundie, nascar fan, art snob. We all have the same needs. So we seek out people that speak the same language.

This whole generation thing - I get it a lot at work. You see, I am about 15/20 years younger than then youngest person. First to be hired in 14 years. And this generation thing does get thrown in my face a lot. I heard this bit on NPR how Gen X is screwed up Gen Y and now there is this other generation "Mini Me". So Gen Y says they invented the internet -- or are using it better than the booomers. They says the Gen X is closed minded. So here I am sitting on the crack of two generations -- Gen X and Y. About three days go by and then I hear it again -- some reference to the fact that I am young. Well, what is this all about -- It seems that every generation blames the one before it. And in good fashion, your kids will accused you of screwing up their life at one point or another. I guess we all need someone to hold our baggage. I mean -- what can really be changed by pointing fingers? Your parents will just say that "get you head out of your ass kid -- we already tried that one on our mom's and dad's. "

Sorry to be late to this party. If anybody's still listening:

The whole thing about generational identification (and religious identification, national identification, etc) is conformity. You're not part of the group if you don't look, behave and talk like part of the group.

Tattoos are the latest badge of conformity.

The original hippies were about nonconformity. Once the Beatles sported long hair, beards and granny glasses, the hippie look became conformity.

At least until the mid-60s, adults I was around felt free to comment critically on men with long hair or beards. Now my dad, a retired chemical engineer, has a beard. And wire frame glasses.

There are still uniforms and they still work. I discovered years ago that if I wore a collared shirt (instead of a T shirt) to faculty meetings, people treated me with more respect.
