New Music for my Birthday

July 17th, 2007 by The Bosphorus

Thanks to the Missus for some new music.

First… TV on the Radio (warning– video contains werewolf chicks)

Then… John Hartford (sadly– no werewolf chicks)

Oh, and she even got me the complete Firefly set.

Damn dude, thats a birthday haul! I haven’t heard but one or two songs by TV on the Radio, but I liked what I heard. Might have to steal your CD.

Thanks so much for the John Hartford. In the late ’60s, my dad used to check out LPs from the Oak Ridge public library and dub them onto reel-to-reel tapes that I listened to over and over. John Hartford was a favorite. Later, I heard him in concert in Nashville (Vanderbilt) and Knoxville (UT-Knoxville) when I was an undergrad at UT, in Chapel Hill when I was a grad student at UNC, in St. Louis when I was a postdoc at Washington U, and about a year before he died, when my folks were up to St. Louis. John is a banjo god. I’ve played banjo myself for over 20 years, and I’ve never been able to figure out exactly what he does. I taught myself a version of “Gum Tree Canoe” when the album came out (remember vinyl?), but it just wasn’t the same.

I have about 12 Hartford albums. Probably less then half of his recordings.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

Joel, I first ran across Hartford on the Oh Bro. where art thou soundtrack. I’ve just begun to listen to him. I didn’t realize you play the banjo. Funny to imagine you and your dad “ripping” albums back in the 60s.

    Happy Birthday Boz.

  8. The Bosphorus Says:

Could it be their accent, Daco?

  9. daco Says:

No dude it’s those teeth, eh.

  10. Suzanne Says:

    Oh, that was mean!

  11. daco Says:

Suzanne, I was afraid I would be misunderstood.
My reference to “canadian chicks” was because that is how the girl referred to herself in “wolf like me.”

  12. Suzanne Says:

    Oops, I missed that reference!

Yeah, that part of the video cracks me up.
