Gardening haiku

August 12th, 2007 by Mrs Eaves

I spent my morning
With a rake, hoe and pruner
Attacked flowerbeds

Sickly irises
Overgrown and neglected
There’s a story there

Irises that are
the children of irises
my brother planted.

They have bloomed each year
that we have lived in this house
despite my neglect.

An old rotten stump
Once a foul persimmon tree
There’s a story there

A drunk driver swerved -
hit a utility pole
and it snapped in half.

The pole had to go,
but the tree was in the way.
So they chopped it down.

***

I worked the dirt
And watched cars carry people
on their way to church

    That’s the garden where
    we planted cantelope once.
    Small, but very sweet.

    BJ’s dad bet G
He didn’t know who’s on the
    hundred dollar bill

    Hundred dollar bet.
    No shit, one hundred dollars
    G has in his hand

    Can’t tell weed from plant
Happy if it’s green these days
    Don’t have a green thumb :-(

    Dog (Mr. Chumley)
was tied to front porch support
    last night saw a skunk

    Now Chum reeks of skunk
    Baking soda peroxide
    baths not helping much

    Porch support pulled down
    crazy dog is really strong
    and not very smart

    Thirty years ago
In St. Mary’s Church, Oak Ridge
    my wife and I wed.

    Empty nesters then,
    In one more week, again,
    Thirty years later.

    love this time of year
    getting back on a schedule
    Monday back to school

    I remember when
the smell of new books open
    new learning begins

    feeling nervousness
    still beckons as a parent
    with new school jitters

    two boys out the door
    wondering what future holds
    time to clean the house!
